IVIE CARES: Teenage Volunteerism
The current generation of teenagers is often criticized for seeking instant gratification. In the eyes of many, they obsess over digital technology, text messaging, and exude a sense of entitlement. Yet they are finding more time to volunteer than any generation before them.
I recently read the post Make This A Summer to Remember from the blog Susan Heim on Parenting and thought of co-workers that have teenage children themselves. With the shortage of jobs right now, summer jobs are difficult to come by for teens this year. Many of the positions they would typically find during these months are simply not available.
In her post, Susan Heim talks about her teenage children and the benefits they have seen by volunteering rather than working for their summer break. While much of the point of a summer job is earning money and the responsibility that comes along with it, there are just as many, if not more, benefits to volunteering:
- Increased self-esteem and empowerment
- Better grades in school
- A sense of accomplishment
